Daniel Tango
Since the late eighties, Daniel Tagno has been a graffiti
writer in the traditional sense. Tagno has always been
interested in the genres of graffiti writing: the tags, the
throwups and the stylepieces. A practice, which in an
almost scholarly way, addresses how citations, styles
and new developments in the shapes of letters and
words are dealt with. A calligraphy of the street,
whereby the writer’s name functions as the basis or
vehicle for presenting the most diverse styles. The word itself doesn’t require any
meaning. The hosts let their letters dance as projection surfaces for coded contents
on our streets.
From the art on the street through the work in the gallery, Daniel Tagno subjects his
letters and words to a new level of meaning. He turns to writing’s original function: to
freeze information. One of his approaches borrows from Chinese calligraphy, where
the individual letter has a connection to the literal iconographic sense.
